). Wow, so what ? The point is that due to the sheer number of people who showed up we all received 3 minutes in total to talk to each other.
Not 3 minutes each. 3 minutes total. The second round went faster. Only 2 minutes each.
Thus it is times like these you need to really be specific and simple with your pitch.
Personally, that night I had decided to do a quick survey because I am considering doing a Periscope and/or BLAB.IM implementation workshop locally.
It worked. I have a follow up to do with someone to do a “duel-scope” where we both go on Periscope and ‘scope each other 🙂 Periscope’s version of BLAB.IM

So before going to the networking event last night I thought, “Hmmm, I’ll turn the Golden Question into an answer”, so when someone inevitably asks: “So Tony, what do you do?
“I show people how to share an app on their smartphone that people love to use, and how to get paid when others use it. What kind of phone do you have?“
Said that to 4 people and each one reached in and pulled out their phone.
3 iPhones, 1 Samsung.
I said “great, that phone is perfect, when can we get together and I’l show you how it works,”
3 appointments set with 1 to follow-up on next week. YAY!!!
PS: I have been going to networking events and answering the “what do you do” question for my other business for years and until last night not one person, that I can remember, was ever that eager to know more about it.
It’s easier than you think. Stop overcomplicating things.
What is your 30 second elevator pitch to pique someone’s curiosity about your business ?
To assist you in composing your personal biography – consider the following five paragraph format used by Australian author Emily Gower.
Introduction: who you are, titles, company name, what you do for people (summary)
Background: qualifications, experience, how you got to do what you do
Service: how you work (consults, speaking gigs, workshops, etc), the value you offer, unique point of difference
Personal: ‘why’ (in form of quote), “I believe everyone has a voice and a message and it is my dedication to bring it out”
Conclusion: anything additional e.g publications in magazines, additional speaking gigs, value you offer people
If you read that heading in a “Big Brother” voice – yes that was my intention and you’re full of awesome-sauce ! 😀
Recently I was “evicted” from an online group coaching programme.
I was wondering why I didn’t listen to myself in month 1 (it was Month 3 by the time I was evicted) and then subsequently in month 2 … why it was bothering me and that I felt like it wasn’t the right fit.
Universe eventually assisted in me in leaving 😉 (ask me about the Feather / Brick / Truck sometime!)
None the less, here are some of the lessons I’m thankful for learning from my time in that online programme:
Your program/offering is for specific people not for everyone
Whilst I applaud the woman behind the program for wanting to “save the world” .. she is trying to offer something for everyone when really she needs to be more specific with what she is offering and WHO is suitable.
(These are my opinions only and those of this ladies’ “tribe” (her loyal followers) will think differently.)
Those who have strong personalities online similar to myself – NO GO. Avoid. How so ? I was told that I was contributing “too much” at one point. I was actively censored from contributing. Yet I was always on topic with my contributions.
Those who have a STAR as their primary Wealth Dynamics profile – NO GO. Avoid. How so ? It links with the before-mentioned in a lot of ways. I like being seen. I’m not afraid to be seen. I am naturally inclined to shine “like a star”. As mentioned, I was actively told to “dim my light”.
THIS is the biggest lesson I learnt from my participation. Further instilling in me that trying to please everyone ends up pleasing no one . . . and you end up with situations like what happened to me 🙁 which is never a good thing.
Be authentic, vulnerable and transparent
Unfortunately, whilst the presenter thought she was being transparent and authentic – IMO she was still holding back. She also presented in a “I’m better than you” style which did bother me at points (a little condescending).
Also, let’s just say that she needs to be up-front with “who is part of her tribe” (as in private clients or loyal to her). Believe me, if I had known this up-front I would have actively “watched what I said” around these types of people. These people are putting the program facilitator on a pedestal and she can do no wrong … and thus anyone who may think differently are “heathens” (and will cause you trouble which it did for me)!
Oh. . . and the big one: The program facilitator actively told me she was not using it as a lead funnel when she was always pushing people to buy her book or buy into online course. If it’s NOT a lead funnel – then why would you constantly plug your book and that online course ? Why couldn’t you actively just leave them out of it ?
Naturally, the “come back” is that “these courses and the book would assist people with the online webinar series”. No. No it will not. IMO. See my next lesson.
Overwhelming Your Participants
Yes, some of the actions seem “easy” to implement. Yet also, some of the actions aka home-play aka homework could take awhile to implement for a lot of people. Why ? WE HAVE LIVES !!
Not to mention, if you did buy the book (thankfully I did not) you not only had the webinar home play .. you also had the book “home play” at the end of each chapter ! Which one do you implement ? The book or the webinar ? I ask this because I managed in the first month to compare the webinar home play (aka homework) to what was in the first chapter . . . and it wasn’t exactly the same . . . and left me more than a little confused !
If you want to offer people actions to implement during the month – actually use the home play that is in each chapter of the book. Word for word.
Watch Your Language
With thanks to one of the participants alerting me to this it gave me a big A-HA moment and another reason why something in me was having an issue with the whole thing.
I watched the replay of her last webinar (Month 3). The amount of negative language this presenter uses has gob-smacked me!
For someone who is pushing to “be positive” – she uses a lot of “don’t” and “should” . . . whoa there !!!

This is an extension of what I’ve before-mentioned in that she is trying to actively craft everyone to be “just like her” when we cannot. She hasn’t at any point in time taken into account everyone’s different lives, values, priorities, wants and needs … not to mention personalities. At no point have did I feel she is wanting us to craft our own lives and do things more in alignment with who we are holistically.
I’m immortalising this moment for all prosperity to remind myself. Face the fear and do it anyway. Plus to remind myself that the Universe has my back and the right person will always appear at the right time. Thank you so much to Kate and thank you so much to the Universe…. and most importantly THANK YOU TO MYSELF for DOING IT !
What did I do that I’m celebrating ?
Making “Who Do You Know” phone calls.
Similar to cold calling however not quite the same as I’m using the Free Speed Networking Gold Coast list (since I’m co-host) thus whilst some of the people on the list know who I am (as they attend regularly) – others may not remember me.
I also started out ‘light’ by giving myself the goal of doing 5 calls in total.
This was one of those moments where I knew that I couldn’t do this by myself. It wasn’t working. Doing it by myself I manifested/created distractions and it was way to easy for me to make excuses.. avoid avoid avoid !!
I knew that if I could do these 5 calls I would have a baseline to use … an experience to draw upon … that would show me – I am ok. I can do this. I have got this. Let’s do it ! 😀
What was incredible about all of this is the whole journey to get to this point.
Firstly, the previous blog post which you do not need to read however you’re welcome to read it anyway. I was feeling a little unsupported, lost and alone.
After speaking with a good friend to remind myself I have some really great people who do know me and who love me for me … all of me.. in my life.. I decided to make the plunge… I decided to call upon the Universe to assist me in dealing with my over-riding life-theme of dealing with my issue of abandonment… I decided to ask the Universe to reveal to me the right person…
As you can see in the comments, Universe gave me a few opportunities. Eventually, Robbyn popped up and could assist me the next day (today) ! YES ! That’s exactly what I wanted as I wanted to get this experience under my belt and in my memory asap … and stop procrastinating on these phone calls.
Unfortunately, she had to go to the hospital however she sent her daughter, Kate, instead. Way to go Universe. She was perfect. She is a PE Teacher thus she has a teaching background anyway so KNEW how to deal with people learning new skills. She was also similar to myself in a lot of ways and we shared a lot in common 🙂 Thank you Kate again you’re awesome.
The English teacher in her helped me flesh out the script I was going to use 🙂
Also, showing her everything allowed her to get a very good idea of the solution I’m providing so as I could be more specific with the problem (what is the challenge I’m trying to solve?).
First call. Chose someone who knew me and had attended the Free Speed Networking regularly. Whilst he personally wasn’t able to be of assistance, he gave me a great connection ! His flatmate 😀 YES !
Stopped. Celebrated. (See this is the best part of having someone physically there with me – because we were able to do a high five, discuss, etc). Decided to choose person number two.
Someone who might be familiar with me but not overly familiar with me. Also someone who might actually know women who are wanting to improve their self confidence.
Good possibilities there !
Third call – VOICEMAIL ! Left a quick voicemail message. Will wait for him to call me back.
Break. Discuss. Need to not be so damn nervous and speak a million words a minute. Take a breath. BREATHE !
Fourth call – Someone who is familiar with me. Whilst she couldn’t give me anyone off the top of her head, once again she gave me the heads up on a good contact who also does seminars regularly – thus their might be a possible JV or at least she could speak briefly at my events and vice versa 😉 or something.
We stopped again. Just de-briefed and had a chat and relax. Before I stopped making excuses to make the fifth call.
Someone who may not remember me from the event. This was my first one who didn’t know anyone as all her friends were already pretty self-confidence and “out there” (as she described them). It helped me realise I needed to make clear to people that whilst my 1 Day event is GC based … Lady Vee ( Sensuality / Confidence Coach ) is ultimately able to service anyone anywhere as most of everything else can be done via phone or Skype and so forth.

When you call someone you know and want to introduce your business or product, you may be sure she has her mind FULL of other stuff. Kids, FB, email, chores, AND worrying about her bills, a problem with her spouse, not having anything ready for dinner, the teen who’s overweight, you get the picture.
So when she answers the phone for you that first time, the attention you get is probably not even ONE percent of her brain.
That’s not enough to process your words.
Here’s something I do – and teach my babies – that gets you at least ONE moment of her almost full attention – 65%-70%. That’s as good as it’s going to be on that first date.
“Hey there Lulu? It’s Kim!”
[Oh hi there Kim! How’re you?]
“Fine, thanks. Say Lulu – I only have a minute. The reason I’m calling is – I’m calling everyone I know to ask them a question. Do you have a sec?”
(Go ahead and say that out loud to see how it sounds to your own ears.)
At that moment, I can always feel the other person turning their attention AWAY from the computer or her chore, and for the next few seconds, I have most of her attention.
How would you use that 30-45 seconds of time?
Remember, it’s a question you will ask, not a lecture or other propaganda about your thing.
NOTE. The name of your company adds nothing to her life. The name of your product adds nothing to her life. The science of the product adds nothing to her life. The company’s vision adds nothing to her life. Making a big promise likely makes her eyes roll. Accosting or pressuring her ensures she won’t pick up the phone next time she sees it’s you on Caller ID.
